The trouble is, the unconscious parts of a brain don’t know the difference between reality and what we are thinking so when these thoughts stress us our brain registered that threat is real.

If you see it in a short-term, this is uncomfortable, but for long-term overthinking can lead to frustration, anxiety, fear and depression and can have a seriously negative impact on every part of your life.

This impact is even more detrimental when overthinking becomes a habit. It’s initially soothing, the more we do it the more our anxiety increases.

And as our anxiety level rise our happiness plummets. Spending a large chunk of time thinking about something terrible that might happen at some late date is not a very effective strategy.

But the real problem is when overthinking starts to dominate our lives. If we spend more time in “our head” then in the “moment”, it’s time to seek a better balance because this can make a way to depression too.

Overthinkers may have trouble distinguishing between the fear of making mistakes, which leads to overthinking to the point where they make no decisions and the deep feeling that something is wrong. Shut down overthinking by involving yourself in an activity you enjoy. This looks different for everyone but ideas include

It can be hard to start something new when you are overwhelmed by your thoughts. If finding a distraction feels quite tough, try setting aside as small chank of time – say – 30 minutes – every other day. Use this time to either explore potential destruction or double in existing ones.

This is a big one. For all of us who are watching for perfection, we can stop waiting right now. Being ambitious is great but aiming for perfection is unrealistic and impractical. The moment you start thinking, “this needs to be perfect.” is the moment you need to remind yourself, “waiting for perfect is never as smart as making progress.

7. Put a timer to work :

Give yourself a boundary, set a timer for 5 minutes, and give yourself that time to think to worry and analyze. Once the timer goes off, spend 10 minutes with a pen and paper, writing down all the things that are worrying you, stressing you, or getting you anxiety. Let it rip, when the 10 minutes is up, throw the paper out, and move on preferably to something fun.

8. Accept your best :

The fears that grounds overthinking are often based on feeling that you are – not good enough not smart enough or hardworking enough or dedicated enough.
